Hickling sets sights high for 2018

Adam Hickling is hoping to raise his game in 2018 and challenge for more titles after winning the PGA in Hampshire Order of Merit, writes Ken Gaunt.

With four victories on the circuit and 13 top five finishes behind him, the Stoneham PGA Professional is planning to be a regular contender in the PGA south region events next season.

He said: “I am aiming to step up and play in some South region events and challenge myself. That’s what I feel I need to do.

“There are a lot of top players who have played at a high level and it will be interesting to see how I shape up.

“To be seen as the most consistent player over the year, means a lot. I am really delighted to have won the Order of Merit.”

Hickling finished ahead of 2016 winner Martin Adams (Swanmore Golf Centre) by the small margin of £2.53 in prize money, while Lee on the Solent’s Jon Barnes came third.

The trio made up the Hampshire side that finished one shot behind Essex - who defeated Cheshire & North Wales in a play-off at the PGA Inter-County Championship at The Belfry in October.

Reflecting back on that result, Hickling added: “While it was hard to take at the time, it was good experience in what has been a very good season for me.

Even though there is a bit of rivalry between us, Martin has become a good friend. It was good to play alongside him in the PGA Inter-County Championship as it was with Jon, whose experience is such an asset.”
