A light lunch led to a feast of seven birdies and saw Stoneham’s Adam Hickling break the course record at the Army GC with a seven-under par 64, writes Ken Gaunt.
In the process, the Stoneham professional romped home to a six-shot victory in the third Be Wiser Insurance PGA in Hampshire Stroke Play Championship, and the winner’s cheque for £721.
Hickling trailed first round leader Jon Barnes (Jon Barnes Golf) by three shots after posting a steady 71. But he quickly made up ground to secure back to back wins in this popular event. So what did he have for lunch? "A cheese and pickle sandwich, there you go." he said with a grin. "It must have been that!"
Hickling, who also won the Hampshire Patrons Young Pros event, added: “The course is always pretty tricky so to get to four-under at the turn knowing you have a few chances coming in, is quite nice.
"If you keep it in play here you have a chance. If you use a driver you can get caught out. I used a lot of long irons off the tee. I have been playing quite well recently but did not play great in the morning. I managed a few ups and downs, which helped.”
He added: "It’s second time I have scored 64 this year. I did it at Hockley in the Winter Alliance but that was not the same as doing it when it matters."
Porchester-based Barnes finished tied second on 141 (68, 73) alongside Chris Hudson (70, 71) of the home club.
