Waterville's David Higgins dipped into the PGA Irish Tour with considerable success in the Newcastle Garages PGA Pro-Am at Greystones.
He was the only player to see red as he fired a three-under-par 66 to open a three shots gap at the top of the leaderboard with Daniel Beattie, Brendan McGovern and Irish champion Niall Kearney in the chasing pack.
The Kerry man sprinkled five birdies over his card with just two bogeys to take the winner’s cheque from the €8,000 purse.
The big hitter showed his intentions early with a birdie three at the second hole but then lost the advantage when he carded a bogey five at the next. Then birdies at the sixth, seventh and ninth holes sent Higgins to the turn in three-under 32.
He eased over the homeward run with a four at the long 15th and a bogey five on the home green for his winning card of 66.
McGovern shot down an eagle at the par-five ninth hole to turn in 33 blows. However, he pencilled in three bogey fives plus a birdie two during his round.
Kearney will reflect of a possible lost chance as he bogeyed the eighth hole and dropped two strokes at the ninth for an outward run of 37, before a one-under back nine. Beattie balanced three birdies with three bogeys.
The team event was won by Nigel Howley (Balbriggan) with 89 points four points ahead of Ciaran Molloy (Blackwood GC) and Gary Wardlow (American Golf).
