Home advantage paid off in the Cornwall Professional Golfers Alliance at Trevose where assistant Grant Slater maintained his consistent form for the season by taking the professional award with a two-under-par round of 69.

He pipped his boss Gary Lenaghan, the club professional, by one shot on a day of heavy showers with hail and a strong blustery wind. But conditions improved later and some good scores were returned in spite of the conditions.

James Ruth (China Fleet), who has qualified to play in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May after a highly successful season in the West last year, was third on 72.

He also won the pairs with Falmouth amateur Dave Holland on 41 points, one better than Ivyleaf pair professional Dan Wood and Dale Howarth and the Lenaghan and Mike Ellis partnership with another Trevose pair Slater and club owner Nick Gammon on 39. They beat Nigel Connelly and Jason Hill (Bowood) on countback.

Richard Sadler (Killiow) returned 73 to take the fourth professional place, three shots ahead of Wood and Scott Richards (Truro).
