How to build a successful junior programme at your golf facility

23/01/2024

A thriving junior golf programme can often be essential for the long-term vitality of a golf facility. Engaging young golfers not only introduces them to the sport, but also fosters a sense of community around your facility.

To create a successful junior programme, Wayne O’Callaghan, one of Ireland’s leading junior golf coaches, explains the key elements that must be considered.

Safety

Ensuring the safety of the children is paramount. Attending a child protection course will not only safeguard the young golfers but also protect yourself. Educating juniors in the rules and etiquette of the game is fundamental, and conducting monthly quizzes can make this learning experience fun and engaging.

Communication is key

Promote your programme effectively. Host an open evening for parents and guardians. Share with them how your program can help their child improve while emphasising the fun factor. Forge connections with local schools by offering to demonstrate golf on their premises and encourage them to share programme details with parents.

Make it fun

While instilling the basics and fundamentals is essential, remember that juniors thrive in a fun and playful atmosphere. Avoid over-coaching, allow them to experiment, and introduce competitive challenges in each session. Always offer encouragement to keep their motivation high.

Equipment

Not all junior golfers will have their clubs initially. Supplying appropriately sized and weighted junior clubs is not only considerate but also positions you as a reliable source when they decide to invest in their own equipment.

Invest in education

Take courses dedicated to junior development. These can be broader than golf-specific ones. For instance, the Titleist Performance Institute offers a comprehensive course on junior development suitable for all levels.

Harness technology

Technology is a powerful teaching tool for today's young generation. Investing in a launch monitor can significantly enhance the learning experience. Juniors are accustomed to technology and incorporating it into your program can make it more appealing.

Engage parents

Keep parents and guardians informed about their child's progress. Hosting adult/junior scramble events periodically, teeing off from ability-rated distances, can be a fun way to involve families in your programme.
