PGA Members have the opportunity to learn from one of the very best in the business as PGA Live speaks to Dr. Rick Sessinghaus, coach to multiple Major winner Collin Morikawa.
Rick speaks about his career in golf and explains how he has helped shape Morikawa into one of the best golfers in the world during their 17-year collaboration.
Among the topics covered in the podcast, Rick details his routine with Morikawa, focusing on different strategies each week and how he works on creating the shot rather than changing his swing.
“This is crucial,” says Rick. “Professional golf is all about having the shot and the ability to play that shot under pressure. It’s not about making robotic swings, we are artists on the course it is our canvas!”
Rick states how important it was to practice with a purpose. He and Morikawa go into each session with a plan and what they want to achieve by the end of the session.

What Rick has also learnt over the years of coaching is that every client is different in their manner and approach to the game of golf. The skill for the coach is to adapt to that individual and play to their strengths.
Rick has also spent many years observing other elite level coaches, and what he saw from them is that they just watched their players, not feeling they needed to speak, but just observed what they were doing, allowing them many shots before stepping in and talking to them.
A key message Rick shared was that golf coaching is a journey and one where you don’t stop learning and developing. Most of this learning comes from the player, then as a coach you go away, learn about what you have observed, and then either correct or put into practice what you have learnt.
Rick also encouraged PGA Members to step off the practice range and work with their players on the golf course.
He continued: “We spend most of our time during a tournament week on the golf course working on specific shots from all over the course, because you don’t know when you are going to need that shot.”
