St Mellons assistant Toby Hunt made home advantage pay at the South Wales PGA medal which was switched from Newport where heavy winds and stormy conditions during the night closed the course.
Hunt, twice the West Assistants champion, birdied three of his first nine holes. He followed with eight pars, before closing with two bogeys. But the dropped shots proved to be insignificant, as his round of level par 70 brought a six-shot win, the largest margin of victory this year.
Craig Melding (Neath) continued his good winter form by sharing second place with Joe Ferguson (Celtic Manor Resort), Kevin Davies (Caerphilly) and Christian Askins (Radyr).
Melding’s high finish kept him at the top of the order of merit going into the next medal at Grove.
The team prize was also won in a comfortable fashion by and amateur partner Des Lane. Their 65 was three better than five other pair.
New PGA regional secretary Robert Moss attended the PGA in South Wales annual meeting which followed. Davies was appointed new captain, Christian Askins as the new county secretary and Hunt as a committee member.
