Adam Frayne (Yelverton) made it a double first in the Assistants and Under-30 Pros Sprint event over the tricky Stranahan course at The Players Club.
He shared top spot with Christian Askins (Radyr) in the first outing at Weston-super-Mare but this time his two-under-par 66 over the bunkerless 5,469-yard course built by Players Club co-owner Adrian Stiff four years ago was enough for an outright win. Incidentally Frayne’s father Frank was Stiff’s business partner in several course-building projects.
Frayne, who has abandoned the expensive life on mini-tours, is in his first year of PGA training. But Yelverton club pro Tim McSherry is fully supportive of his new employee’s ambition to make his mark in the South West.
He started with a birdie, made another at the par-five fourth, but a bogey at the second and a double at the par-three eighth left him over par at the turn. Then he made three successive birdies from the 12th to lead.
Joint runner-up in the Titleist and FootJoy supported event was Leigh Jones. (Tickenham) He finished one shot behind after sharing third spot in the Weston-super-Mare leg. He made an identical birdie, bogey, par, birdie start to Frayne. He made his only birdie on the back nine at the par-five 12th to tie Frayne. But his chance of winning ended when he dropped a shot at the par three final hole.
Chris O’Neill from Valleys Golf Enterprise at Rhondda Golf Club shared second after a mixed bag of a round. He was three over par after three holes, followed by two successive birdies and another at the eighth to draw level. He bogeyed the ninth but back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 boosted his round.
Nicky Maddison (Saunton) made three birdies and three bogeys in 68 to share third with another Valleys Golf Enterprise player Matthew Phythian who is still pondering over a poor finish.
He was leading at three-under-par after making his third and fourth birdies at the 14th and 15th. But he bogeyed the next hole and took a double at the 17th.
