Former European Ryder Cup Captain Tony Jacklin surprised Gus Andreone on March 16 at Palm Aire Country Club’s “Wacky Wednesday” member event in Sarasota, presenting the 104-year-old PGA Professional with one of his signature “Marquetry” pieces.
Jacklin’s gift was his rendering of the famed 1969 “Concession” at Royal Birkdale Golf Club where he was conceded a two-foot par putt by Jack Nicklaus that resulted in the first draw (16-16) in Ryder Cup history.
Jacklin was asked by his pilot friend, Joe Leach, a Palm Aire Country Club member, if he would like to meet Andreone. Jacklin used the occasion to honour Andreone for his contributions to golf.
Marquetry is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. Jacklin, who lives in nearby Bradenton, Florida, has used his hobby to present similar pieces to Jack Nicklaus, and to Arnold Palmer and Gary Player on the occasion of their respective 80th birthdays.
Jacklin said that meeting Andreone, the oldest and longest serving PGA of America member was “a special thing.”
“I’ve never met anyone 104,” said Jacklin. “He’s a remarkable gentleman. It was a pleasure and a privilege.”
