James the first in seven-hole shoot-out

It was not quite seventh heaven for James Freeman when he won the PGA in England & Wales (North) Druh Belts Assistants’ Shootout at Cookridge Hall.

But the second year assistant professional at Doncaster club Owston Hall was clearly delighted to pick up a £500 cheque and crystal glass trophy from sponsor Simon Hurd – nearly six months after the original date was washed out.

The 32-year-old former England amateur international birdied the final green when he pitched from 42 yards to two feet in a competition format which could be best described as “different” because it was played out over seven holes.

That was decided by ex-European Tour player Hurd who was keen to add a “bit for excitement” to the event!

And there was certainly plenty of that when all eight finalists teed off together from the first.

Those who failed to make a par were soon eliminated. And if the remaining players were level over the ensuing holes a sudden death pitch and putt or a bunker splash-out decided their fate.

Last man standing was Freeman, winner of five events since turning professional, who has set his sights on a playing career, or coaching, once he qualifies.
