Former European Tour player Jamie McLeary delivered a stunning round to win the PGA Assistants' Championship Scottish qualifying event on home territory at Deer Park Golf Club.

McLeary carded a seven under par round of 65 at the Livingston venue to win by four shots ahead of Sam Binning of Mearns Castle Golf Academy in Glasgow.

The 37-year-old McLeary admitted the conditions were perfect on the day. But he took time to get into his stride before a dazzling six under par back nine secured his place at the top of the leaderboard.

He and Binning now join 11 other qualifiers at the £32,000, Birdietime-supported, grand final which will be played at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey between July 3-5.

Linzi Allan (West Kilbride Golf Club) and Nichola Ferguson (Cathcart Castle Golf Club) also made it through to the final at Deer Park.

McLeary, who has also played on the European Challenge Tour and the Asian Tour, blew the rest of the field away and his round also included an eagle at the 14th hole.

“I didn’t play that well on the front nine, I was one over par up until the seventh hole before getting birdies at the eighth and ninth,” he said.

“But it was a perfect day, no wind, nice and sunny and the ground was firm. The greens were firm and they were the ideal conditions to shoot that sort of score.

“The eagle came at the 14th hole where the wind usually means you can’t get there in two shots.

“But it was much shorter on this occasion, the weather was in the players’ favour, I wouldn’t say it was easy though.”

McLeary is also hoping to make home advantage count next week as well.

“We’ve got an Order of Merit event here so I wouldn’t mind doing the same thing again,” he added.

“I’ve never played at Farleigh before, the only Surrey course I’ve been to is Wentworth. So I’m looking forward to it as the courses down there are always nice.”
