Jeff hoping Dan is the man at Northants County

Jeff Greenwood admits he will have to convince his opponents that he is not related to Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort professional Dan Greenwood when the pair tee off in the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge Midlands qualifying event.

Captain Jeff partners the 2013 PGA Professional Champion in the event which takes place at Northamptonshire County Golf Club on Monday, September 12.

They, along with a host of teams from Midlands including host pro Tim Rouse and captain Frank Ainger, will be aiming to win a place in the £25,000 final which takes place at Spanish destination Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community.

The resort, which features two Greg Norman designs, will stage the event over 36 holes from Wednesday, November 30 - Thursday, December 1.

And Jeff says there is always a comment about the fact that he will be teaming up with his namesake.

“Dan always jokes that I’m his dad!” smiled Jeff, a 60-year-old retired deputy headmaster from Scunthorpe.

“But no, we’re not related.”

The 11 handicapper hopes that Dan’s experience can help them to the final - and extend his captaincy at the Lincolnshire club.

“I’m coming to the end of my year as captain, but I suppose I could extend the role if we won at Northampton and qualified for Spain,” he said.

“We’ll have to see if that happens but I’d like to think we can play well on the day. I’ve been involved in a few events with Dan and we haven’t done too badly.

“Obviously Dan has quite a pedigree behind him as a former PGA champion. And he plays a lot of events in the Midlands region so I hope some of that can rub off on the day.

“Dan’s an established professional and certainly plenty of people seem to know him when we play together.”

Jeff says there are few better venues for him to play his golf than Forest Pines.

“It’s an excellent course - I've been a member here since 2002 - and we’ve hosted several PGA events here over the years,” he added.

"But maybe I've fallen victim to the 'captain's curse' this year with the extra duties involved.

"My handicap was around nine, but it's gone up to 11 now.

“But we’re both looking forward to playing at Northants County and I’m really excited about the event.”

Among the teams from the Midlands also set to take part at Northants County are: Lee Clarke and Peter Benson (Beeston Fields Golf Club); Andrew Willey and Tim Parker (Bulwell Forest Golf Club); Brian Rimmer and Andy Morris (Little Aston Golf Club); Danny Spillane and Stuart Birtwistle (Rothley Park Golf Club); and Kevin Crossland and Richard Barrick (Worksop Golf Club).
