Stonebridge Golf Club played host to a tightly contested PGA Assistants’ pro-am as the season's first Order of Merit event ended in a tie.

No golfer was able to truly conquer the well set up test provided by the Somers/Hampton course combination at the Meriden venue, and ultimately Fred Jewsbury and Andrew Jones shared the winners cheque with a pair of one-under-par 69s.

Jewsbury, assistant pro at Stratford-on-Avon GC, got his season off to a fine start, two birdies in the final three holes saw a steady round rewarded for the 29 year old.

Meanwhile the highlight of Jones’ round came with an eagle at the 15th hole. The pair just edged out Matthew Whelband (Park Hill) who recovered from a bad start to shoot a level-par 70 for outright third with Matt Stephens (Birstall), Russell Harper (The Belfry) and Simon Booth (Ruddington Grange) sharing joint fourth place, one further back.

The assistants Order of Merit season comprises seven events in all, made up of both pro-ams and betterball events and runs until the end of September.
