Filton’s Daryl Kelley collected his first win of the Gloucester and Somerset PGA winter season on a day of high scoring at Shirehampton.

His three-over-par 70 was one lower than Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs) and Nigel Warburton (Knowle), on his 50th birthday.

Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) was amazed that his 74 earned fourth-place cheque and he also extended his commanding lead at the top of the Total Triumph Order of Merit.

The Bristol venue high above the River Avon is the shortest course on the calendar but demands accurate approach play, and a stiff wind added to the difficulties.

Kelley, fresh from a family break in the sun, opened with a birdie but dropped shots at the fifth, eighth and 11th. His second birdie came at the 14th but he double bogeyed the long par four 17th.

Ellis made four bogeys. Warburton, who arrived a trifle bruised after tripping over his cat and tumbling down the stairs the previous evening, had a chance to share top spot but just missed his birdie putt on the closing par-three hole.

But consolation was sharing the birdie sweep with Filton’s Tom Duke who also made three. Warburton and Ellis also shared the Over 40s sweep.
