Kelley eyes win at Wedmore

08/05/2013

Gloucester and Somerset PGA captain Daryl Kelley from Filton collected his first medal victory of the season at Isle of Wedmore to complete a double as he also won two years ago.

This time his two-under-par 68  was one better than Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin who did enough to clinch the Total Triumph Order of Merit title and snuff out the late challenge from Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) in the bright May sunshine.

Kelley produced a solid round making three birdies and dropping just one shot. He opened his round with a birdie at the par five first, added another at the dogleg par four seventh to turn in 32.

His final birdie came at the par five 15th but he dropped his only shot at the par three last.

Goodwin made five birdies at the first, fourth, seventh, 12th and 15th, added to four bogeys, including one on the 18th.

The closing stretch proved difficult and costly for the other players. Matt Carter, Kelley’s assistant at Filton, returned one of his best results of the season but dropped two shots at the last for a 71 to claim third place.

But his was not the worst disaster at the troublesome 18th for Nick Ellis (Naunton Downs) made a triple bogey to share fourth on 72 with Henbury’s Ross Langdon.

Licata’s challenge ended with 73 and a share of sixth with Pat Baker (Mendip Spring) and Kevin Pitts (Mendip).
