The PGA is saddened by the news that popular North region Member Stretton Wright has passed away just days before his 50thbirthday.
Stretton began his career in golf as a young member at Hornsea Golf Club. He quickly came through the ranks to successfully represent the East Yorkshire in a number of tournaments.
In the early 90s, Stretton joined the professional ranks and became a teaching professional at Beverley and East Riding Golf Club.
A serious knee injury brought at an end Stretton’s promising playing career, but undeterred, he went on to complete his PGA qualification and in 1999 he became the head professional at his ‘home’ club Hornsea.
Stretton worked tirelessly and passionately on a variety of activities and in 2015 he became the venue’s new director of golf. He continued to promote Hornsea’s membership sections and he is credited with helping the club continue its rise up the Yorkshire golf club rankings.
Stretton’s brother, Kenton, who is also a PGA Professional based at Driffield Golf Club, commented: “He was an extremely popular friend and mentor to many local fellow professionals and amateur golfers throughout the East Riding of Yorkshire. He will be very sadly missed and never forgotten.”
