Kippen wins the battle but Goodwin takes control of the Order of Merit

Enmore Park amateur Matt Kippen won the latest Gloucester and Somerset winter series event at Naunton Downs while defending champion Ed Goodwin claimed the lead in the Total Triumph Order of Merit.

The effects of Storm Dennis had taken their toll on the venue, just as it had at most of the others in the area but the Cotswolds course was in fine condition considering the recent battering.

Sixteen holes survived the deluge, nevertheless the entire field had to cope with persistent rain.

Kippen, however, coped best of all with the conditions, racking up 34 points to finish one clear of Andrew March, the leading PGA Professional.

March, the PGA South West chairman who is attached Brean Golf Club, was left to rue a solitary blip that consigned him to second place with 33 points.

Having birdied the sixth and 17th, he bogeyed the 18th while playing partner Kippen birdied the hole to snatch victory.

Meanwhile, Cirencester’s Mark Plummer, the third member of the group, matched par with 32 points, a total equalled by Stockwood Vale’s Jack Hayward and Goodwin.

As a result, and with longtime leader Lee Corfield absent, Goodwin, who is also attached to Cirencester, now leads the Total Triumph Order of Merit.
