Local government worker Pam Robinson (above) is getting in the swing – thanks to the Get into golf drive led by Nottinghamshire PGA pro Rob Ellis.
The 59 year old from Newark was delighted to be given the chance to give golf a go in the ladies only beginner sessions at Newark Golf Club which form part of the Nottinghamshire County Golf Partnership’s campaign to help would-be golfers get started in the sport.
Ellis led the sessions with the group and provided a helpful introduction to the skills needed.
“These sessions have helped give a good direction for people starting out in the sport, while the club has also benefited by gaining at least 15 new full playing members, which has been very welcome,” said Ellis.
Robinson, a keen sports fan, revealed she had wanted to try an activity that she could play for as long as possible and that the Get into golf course was the ideal introduction.
“Golf is just so interesting!” she says. “It is a challenge compared to other sports but trying to improve is addictive.”
The senior licensing officer, added: “What’s great is the handicap system - being able to compete with other players no matter what ability they are!
“This means you can play at a competitive level forever, which is something that other sports cannot offer.”
A new round of Get into golf sessions will be teeing off at Newark on Sunday, April 12 (11am).
Marie Holt, 40, echoed Robinson’s view that golf is a sport for all ages. She decided to try golf for a bit of exercise and has now joined the club as a member.
“It really surprises me that not many ladies play because we can still play against the men and beat them! It’s a sport for life. It’s very addictive and a good way to meet new friends.”
Former university student Rebecca Pritchard, 23, says golf is a great way to spend time with family and friends.
“The Get into golf lessons were totally relaxed and enjoyable,” she says. “Progressing more and more is so rewarding and golf is a great way to spend more time outdoors. It’s amazing how sociable it is; I didn’t realise I would meet so many people and make friends with everyone in my group.”
The Nottinghamshire CGP is delivering a special initiative making it easier than ever for ladies to give golf a go and enjoy a sport that brings many health and social benefits.
The Get into golf Ladies Tee Club offers ladies great value regular group coaching led by PGA Professional coaches, followed by a few holes of golf where the coaching can be put into practice.
Between the two sessions, participants can socialise and enjoy refreshments in the clubhouse.
It is an inexpensive way for women of any age to get into the sport and a great way for existing members to get some practice in between competitions.
So whether you are in need of a new hobby to take up with friends, or want the opportunity to play more golf at your club while improving your game this programme could suit you. New players will also get the chance to receive a trial membership package at many clubs involved.
