New European Tour player Laurie Canter hit a hot streak on the warmest day of the year to win the Players Championship Pro-Am over his home Cumberwell Park course.

Canter's round of 66 featured six birdies and 12 pars for a one-stroke success.

Canter, who won his Tour card for this season, is striving to retain his status this summer. But he produced a series of accurate iron shots and added steady putting on immaculate greens with a faultless display.

Liam Bond (Marriott St Pierre) rates Cumberwell his favourite course and has enjoyed considerable success there. He also made six birdies but one dropped shot at the notoriously relegated him to runner-up.

He shared the position with PGA Cup winning captain Jon Bevan (Sherborne) who is running into form now the season is well underway. After success in the previous event at Sherborne his only blemish was a dropped shot on the short third.

Newquay’s Chris Gill also shared second. He also carded six birdies and his only bogey came the first hole.

Louis Boston (Windmill Golf Academy), Matt Dearden (Cardiff) and Adam Frayne (Yelverton), who is defending the Players Championship he won a year ago, shared fifth on 67.

On a day sponsored by Lansdown Mazda Toby Hunt (St Mellons) and the Capital Group Ltd team finished top of the 51 teams playing from dawn to dusk with 93 points.

Occasional player and home teaching professional Paul Morss showed the form he displayed in winning the now defunct matchplay championship 19 years ago by leading the Tim Shiner team into second on 91.Max Billingsley (St Kew) was third with the Plumbase trio.
