Calcot Park’s Alex Lodge is the new PGA South Assistants & Trainees Champion, after shooting 36 hole total of five-under-par at Langley Park Golf Club.
Lodge had opened with a solid one-under par round of 68 on Monday morning to find himself sharing the lead with Matthew Andrews (Highwoods), Adam Reid (Corhampton), Ben Wall (Tournebury Golf Centre) and Alex White (Addington Palace).
Then in the afternoon round, Lodge picked up some early birdies at the sixth and seventh but made a dramatic move when he eagled the 14th to move into pole position.
A bogey on the 17th was immediately repaired with a deuce on the 18th, and two more solid pars left him on five-under for the overall lead in the championship.
Taking home his winner’s cheque for £1,000, a very happy Lodge commented: “It really came together this afternoon. This makes all the hard work worthwhile, and it’s a huge boost for the rest of the season.”
Opening with a 69, recent winner Jordan Godwin was another who got into the groove, firing off an impressive 66 to end up on 135, two strokes behind Lodge but with a handy £700 cheque for second spot.
Lodge and Godwin both moved up to second and third respectively in The PGA in England (South) Assistants & Trainees Order of Merit, just behind PGolfCoaching@Pedham’s Adam Clough.
