Louis Boston is hoping to take a less painful route to the PGA Assistants’ Championship final this year when he lines up for the West qualifying event at Bristol & Clifton Golf Club.

Boston qualified for last year’s final at Coxmoor Golf Club after successfully coming through a play-off despite having a broken little finger.

The 30-year-old Chippenham Golf Club final year assistant tees off at this year’s qualifier on May 17.

And he will be hoping to book a place in the £32,000 Birdietime-supported final which will be played at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey between July 3-5.

Boston tied for 39th spot in last year’s final after posting encouraging scores in his first two rounds but fell back on the final day.

“I played quite nicely last year but didn’t have the best final round,” he recalled.

“But I got into the final with a broken finger 12 months ago! That made it an interesting play off, it was difficult at first. But I got through with four or five of us from this area and enjoyed the event at Coxmoor which was an outstanding course.

‘It was my first final, but this year I can relax a bit more now that my final PGA exams are finished.

“In terms of playing, I’m not playing too badly and have a decent schedule set out.”

Boston has played EuroPro Tour Golf and spent time based in Kuala Lumpur.

“My interest definitely lies in playing and I’ll be looking to enter myself in as much as I can,” he said.

“I went down the PGA route because I wanted to play, but work at the same time.  Playing EuroPro made it impossible to do that unless you have considerable backing.

“I played on the Tour and in Asia where I was in Kuala Lumpur playing on the Asian Development Tour for a while. That was a great experience.

“But this was also probably the only way I was going to get a degree, I didn’t want to go to University and do something else.”
