LowFuelcard.ie to sponsor Irish PGA Championship

The PGA in Ireland has fuelled anticipation for the coming season by unveiling a new sponsor for the Irish PGA Championship
The LowFuelcard.ie Irish PGA Championship will be held at Dundalk Golf Club from October 1- October 4
The LowFuelcard is the latest customer offering from major petrol forecourt retailer, Applegreen plc.
It is aimed at businesses with three or more vehicles and is a convenient and safe way for you and your business to pay for fuel. It is the most competitive fuel card on the market with no card fees or hidden charges.
Joe Barrett, chief operations officer for Applegreen plc said: “Our LowFuelcard has the convenience of online registration, itemised billing and online account management. Customers can also collect Applegreen Reward points when using the LowFuelcard – plus most of our forecourts are open 24 hours.”
Applegreen plc is a major petrol forecourt retailer in the Republic of Ireland with a significant and growing presence in the UK.
From an operational base of 64 sites at the end of 2009, the Group has grown to 152 sites as of late December 2014, across the Republic of Ireland (96 sites), United Kingdom (54 sites) and in Long Island, United States (4 sites). Applegreen is the number one motorway service area operator by number of sites in the Republic of Ireland.
Barrett added: “We are delighted to be involved with this national event which engages with businesses in the locality. Applegreen have recently opened a motorway services area (MSA) at Templepatrick on the M2 outside Belfast and are currently building another MSA on the M1 south bound just outside Lisburn. Applegreen already has a significant business presence on the M1 at Castlebellingham, Lusk, Balbriggan and Gormanston.”
Dundalk GC is set on an elevated site above the seaside village of Blackrock, Co Louth, Dundalk Golf Club offers stunning views across Dundalk Bay to the, legendary and imposing, Cooley and Mourne mountains.
The 18 hole, par 72 championship parkland course, which was redesigned by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1980, offers golfers of all abilities a true test, measuring 6,826 yards from the tips. The renowned facility features an extensive practice ground that includes a driving range, pitching, chipping and bunker areas and a putting green.
Dundalk has hosted the Irish PGA Championship on two previous occasions. In 1953, Harry Bradshaw collected his eighth Irish title with a four round total of 272 and in 1969, Jimmy Martin collected the famous trophy with a score of 269.
There has been extensive improvement work carried out on the course at Dundalk over the last 18 months. A number of new bunkers have been added but the main focus has been on redesigning and improving the drainage of the existing green side traps. A tree-thinning process has also been in operation, with the 15th and sixth greens opened up to the elements.
“This new sponsorship agreement is an important development for this historic championship,” said PGA in Ireland Secretary, Michael McCumiskey.
“The PGA in Ireland looks forward to building a strong partnership with Applegreen over the coming years.”
Last year's Irish PGA Championship, hosted by Adare Manor GC, was won by Niall Kearney, who birdied the 18th to edge out Michael McGeady.
