Damien McEvoy, pictured right, claimed victory in the PING PGA Summer Masters’ Series at Killymoon, finishing one shot ahead of the competition.

He edged to success by carding a one-under-par 69 to squeeze Philip Farrell into second place in what was the third tournament of the inaugural event.

McEvoy had a non-eventful front nine, carding a birdie and a bogey. He trimmed the long third hole to four blows with a drive and five iron just short but he got down in a pitch and putt.

His concession to the course was a three-stab on the eighth green to leave him out in regulation 35. It was a bumpy run home, however, as three birdies and three pars were mixed in with two bogeys.

The Ballycastle Club pro went one-under when he birdied the Index One 12th hole with a drive and sand-wedge to five feet, but immediately handed back the advantage by missing the green at the short 13th.

He then tied together back-to-back birdie fours at 14 and 15. A drive and rescue approaches fell short at 14 but he still managed to save his birdie.

At the next hole McEvoy reached the surface with a drive and three wood, 20 feet from the flag and putted in two strokes to be two-under for his round.

He then missed the green at the par four 17th and pencilled in bogey five before claiming par at the last, which was good enough to give McEvoy top of the leaderboard for the first time this year.

The remaining two rounds in the Summer Masters’ Series will be played at Kirkistown Castle on Wednesday 21 August and at Downpatrick on Monday 2 September.
