Tour player Damien McGrane ripped up the Rathsallagh course, finishing eight-under-par to win the €7,500 Crumlin Hospital Research Pro-Am.
McGrane wasn’t the only player on song, though, as over a dozen bettered par 72 and half-a-dozen others matched the regulation figure.
Clipping at the winner’s heels was Brendan McGovern, just a stroke behind, with John Kelly on 66 and Peter Jones on 67.
Meath-man McGrane, who pencilled in nine birdies, covered the front nine in four-under-par 32 and it was the same story on the homeward track, despite a bogey six at 16, to finish on 64.
After a birdie three at the second hole, McGrane rattled off a hat-trick of birdies (4-2-3) from the sixth and added four more between the 10th and 14th holes, with his second trio beginning at 12. His bogey at 16 was wiped out by birdie two at the next hole.
Headfort pro McGovern got his lapse out of the way at the short second hole before hitting the birdie trail, covering the next 12 holes in eight-under-par. He had a back nine of five-under-31.
John Kelly, from St Margaret’s, pencilled in 10 birdies and must regret a double-bogey six at the 10th hole, added to a four at the short seventh.
It was doubles on the day for Damien McGrane as he also led home the winning team on 98 points.
