Fraser McKenna and James Steven battled Storm Hector to win the Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Championship Scottish qualifying event at Cawder Golf Club.
The two PGA Assistants beat the elements to top the leaderboard by three shots ahead of the Musselburgh Golf Club pairing of Norman Huguet and Cameron Marr.
Now McKenna, of Caldwell Golf Club, and Steven, from Pumpherston Golf Club in Livingston, will play in their first Fourball Championship final when then tee off in the showpiece event at the £33,250 BMW-supported showpiece event which will be played at Belton Woods Golf Club in Lincolnshire on August 29-31.
But McKenna admitted it was tough going as they got the full force of the weather and tried to the birdies on the few occasions the conditions favoured them.
The ex-EuroPro Tour players bogeyed three of the holes at the Glasgow course - but an eagle at the 11th hole helped their cause.
“It was horrendous conditions, we got the storm and it was a case of trying to get us out there playing,” said McKenna.
“The gusts of wind were terrible but we managed to get round and the bogeys we had were just down to the weather.
“It was one of the windiest conditions I’ve played in and Cawder’s a difficult course anyway.
“Almost all the holes were straight into the wind, we just had to try and get through it and get a good score in.
“The 11th was downwind so we were able to get an eagle there. It was certainly challenging.”
McKenna and Steven are new to the PGA and relishing their appearance at Belton Woods.
“This is the first time we’ve played in the competition as a pair, I’m a bit ahead of James in PGA training after coming off the EuroPro Tour but we now have the chance to play in this event,” added McKenna.
“I don’t know much about Belton Woods but we’re both looking to play as well in the final as we did here. This has set us up nicely.”
