Midlands Tournament Review 2024

21/11/2024

2024 has been a great year for tournaments, with excellent performances from Midlands Members at both regional and national levels. All events in the 2024 season were well supported by Members, and we were fortunate enough to have some decent weather for the events, with only a few being affected by rain early in the season.

Order of Merit

The Midlands Order of Merit for 2024 began at Wellingborough Golf Club with the 18th Glazerite Trophy. Matt Cort won the trophy with a score of 6-under par for the two rounds, closely followed by James Freeman and Adam Keogh, who both finished at 5-under par. The second Order of Merit event was the Midland Open, held at Copt Heath Golf Club, which also served as the Midlands Open Series event, open to all PGA Members across the country.

Matt Cort continued his fine run of form to win both the Midland Open and the Open Series with an impressive 11-under par over two rounds, notably he was leading after round one, shooting an unbelievable 8-under par.

The Midland Professional Championship made up the third Order of Merit event of the season, with round one held at Coxmoor Golf Club and round two at Wollaton Park Golf Club. Patrick Ruff and James Whatley both finished round two at 7-under par. It took two play-off holes to separate the pair, with Patrick making a birdie on the second play-off hole to secure the win.

The final Order of Merit event took place at Seacroft Golf Club in early October and saw a dramatic finish to close out the season. After round two, five players were tied at 8-under par for the two rounds: Nick Raybould, Matt Cort, James Freeman, Dave Coupland and Daniel Whitby-Smith. It wasn’t until the second play-off hole that the deadlock was broken by Nick Raybould, who made birdie on the 18th at Seacroft to win the Midland Masters.

After the final event of the season at Seacroft, the Order of Merit standings were finalised, with Matt Cort winning for the seventh time in 2024. James Freeman finished second and Dan Whitby-Smith was very close behind in third. All three players secured a spot in the PGA Play-Offs, held at PGA National Cyprus, Aphrodite Hills Resort, in March 2025, where they will compete for DP World Tour and Challenge Tour starts in the 2025 season.

Senior and Trainee Order of Merit

The Midlands Senior and Trainee Order of Merit took place this year across six events held at Kenilworth, Stoke Rochford, Whittlebury Park, Stourbridge, Longcliffe, and Trentham Park. The Seniors and Trainees have their own individual Order of Merits that run throughout the season, with first, second, and third place finishes being awarded at the end of the season.
Stuart Reynolds won the Seniors Order of Merit, with victories at Kenilworth, Whittlebury Park, and Trentham Park. Tony Westwood and Kevin Beatie finished second and third in the Order of Merit, respectively.

George Raitt won the Trainee Order of Merit ahead of Aarian Matharu in second place, with Jevann Parmar and Tyler Allsopp sharing third place. Raitt only competed in five out of the six events, but with wins at Stoke Rochford and Stourbridge, along with second-place finishes at Kenilworth, Whittlebury Park, and Longcliffe, he secured the victory.

National Performances and PGA Cup

Matt Cort (Beedles Lake) and Adam Keogh (Woodhall Spa) represented The PGA of Great Britain and Ireland at the 2024 PGA Cup, hosted at the Sunriver Resort in Oregon. Tim Rouse captained the team and selected both Cort and Keogh as captain’s picks for the event. The PGA of America won on home soil this time, but we would like to recognise the great achievement of both players in representing not only The PGA but also the region.

There has also been a number of great achievements by the PGA Members of the Midlands at National Events, and we have listed some below:

  • Dave Coupland finished tied first at the Cornish Festival.
  • Matt Cort finished tied second at the South-West Open Series event, while also winning and finishing second in two of the Staysure Q-Series events.
  • Simon Lilly won the West Coast Pro-Am at Bearwood Lakes and then also finished tied third in the K Club Pro-Am.
  • Andrew Willey made it into a play-off for the English PGA Championship and finished tied second.
  • Daryl St John Jones and his partner Colin Walkden from Oakmere Park won the PGA Super 60’s
  • Dan Whitby-Smith and Simon Lilly finished tied second at the PGA Fourball Championship.
  • Nick Raybould and Dave Coupland finished tied third while representing Lincolnshire at the PGA England & Wales Inter-County Championship.
  • Dan Whitby Smith won the SkyCaddie Pro-Captain Challenge final ahead of Patrick Ruff in a play-off.
