Colm Moriarty made a cameo appearance on the PGA Irish circuit and shot to the top of the leaderboard to win the Castlewarden Pro-Am tournament.

The former Athlone amateur, who has been on the Challenge Tour for some time, is attached to the Glasson Hotel & Country Club and in the sunshine he posted a four-under-par 68 to claim the winner’s cheque but only by a stroke from Mark O’Mahoney.

Moriarty trimmed the long first hole to four blows and then pencilled in back-to-back birdies at four and five, for a three-under-par 34 on the front nine. The winner had only one blot on his card and that was bogey five at the 14th hole which wiped out birdie at 11.

However, he made up for that lapse by making another birdie, his fourth of the day, at 15 to gain that precious one shot that gained victory.

The winning team was brought in by Carrick-on-Suir pro Ian St John who combined with his amateurs to post 93 points.
