He has a passion for motorbikes and skiing but it’s the roads of the south west that Robert Moss will be criss-crossing in his new role as secretary of the PGA in England & Wales (South West).
The 44 year old is looking forward to hitting the M5 from his home in Weston-super-Mare and meeting as many members as possible in the coming year.
Moss, formerly a pro at Mendip Spring Golf Club, takes over a busy tournament schedule but is particularly keen to engage with the wider membership.
“You tend to see the guys that play in the tournaments but there are a lot of pros that don’t and I want to meet as many of those as possible to say that we haven’t forgotten about them and that we are here if they need us,” he said.
Moss brings a lot of experience to the role. Until last year he was a member of the Somerset County Golf Partnership committee and was also Chairman of the European Disabled Golf Association Sports Committee, preparing procedural matters for golf’s bid to join the Paralympics and has worked as Head Tournament Director with the European Disabled Golf Association.
The rules have also been a passion and he has been a member of the PGA Rules Panel for the past 15 years and also Tournament Director for the PGAs of Europe.
Highlights include refereeing at the 2015 USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits and he was an observer at the 2010 Ryder Cup when it went into an extra day at Celtic Manor.
Moss was born in Lancashire but not to a golfing family. His father Frank raced motorbikes, competing at the Isle of Man in the Manx Grand Prix on six occasions.
Motocross was an early passion for Moss but he got the golfing bug collecting balls on a local municipal for extra pocket money.
“I used to see people playing and soon got bitten and began playing at a local club Shaw Hill Golf Club in Chorley,” he said.
He worked for three years in the pro shop at Shaw Hill then joined Hindley Hall.
In 1992 he was offered a job at Mendip Spring and did his PGA training there – under Nicky Lumb, the current PGA captain.
