Ashford’s Tom Muchmore notched up his first victory of the 2016 season, winning the Lee-on-the-Solent Pro-Am with a four-under-par 65.

Muchmore, who had threatened to win on several occasions over the winter, had to wait until late in the day to find out that his 65 was indeed good enough for him to claim the win and take home a cheque for £888.

A stroke behind with cards of 66 were West Berkshire’s Paul Simpson and Hayling’s Mark Treleaven who each took away cheques for £721.

Simpson was four-under at the turn and leading, but a double bogey at the 13th set him back, and while he made one more birdie at the 15th, he couldn’t quite match Muchmore’s score. Treleaven on the other hand was tying for the lead until dropping a shot at the last hole.

Muchmore had never played Lee-on-the-Solent before, but his course management proved the best club in the bag.

“I played safe and didn’t go for anything, taking a lot of irons off the tee, and making 16 greens in regulation with a few putts,” he said.

“I played quite well in the Titleist & FootJoy PGA South Winter Series, coming close on a couple of occasions, but just not quite putting the scores together for a win. My form’s been OK so far in 2016, but winning here will be a huge boost to my confidence that I’ve got the game to win.

“I’m really looking forward to the rest of the 2016 season now, and it would be nice to put together some decent scores in the Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit events as well as some more pro-ams.”
