PGA Master Professional John Mulgrew, who has spent a lifetime in golf nurturing future generations of PGA Professionals, has been recognised for his contribution at the annual PGA graduation ceremony.
The 66-year-old, based at Airdrie Golf Club, has had a distinguished career and has played an instrumental part in establishing the PGA Training Academy as the best in the world.
Mulgrew, who is a tutor, marker and mentor for the hundreds of aspiring professionals on the PGA Foundation Degree in Professional Golf, was also pivotal in the establishment of the industry-standard PGA Director of Golf qualification.
The Scot was presented with a limited edition Baxter Print of the famous 10th Hole on the Brabazon course at The Belfry by PGA Captain Neil Selwyn-Smith, in front of a number of his latest students at the University of Birmingham.
Mulgrew said: “This is a wonderful gift, which I am absolutely delighted to receive. My wife calls The Belfry my second home so now I can put it in my house.
“I would like to pay thanks to [Director of Education & Career Development] Kyle Phillpots and his team for developing the training programme and the degree itself.
“I am privileged to know so many top professionals and experts in the field, who are there to help and will be there to help all of those graduating. What is pleasing is to see so many people from overseas doing the degree.”
Mulgrew, a former chairman of the PGA Training Committee, also had some words of advice for the new PGA Professionals about to embark on their careers in the industry.
“You have been given many skills and have the knowledge but it’s all in your head. The challenge is to get it out and use it,” he said.
“You are at the start of your careers and there are so many opportunities for you. A little bit of advice from me is that you need to keep going with your education.
“Keep training and keep working. You are in a profession where you enjoy what you do and can make a huge impact.
“Keep organised. The more organised you are the more time you will have and finally remember this MMFI – make me feel important. Think what you can do for others.”
