National Assistants Champion Lee Corfield

National assistants champion Lee Corfield won his first Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal as a professional over at the Stranahan course at The Players Club, near Bristol.

The Burnham and Berrow trainee finally joined the PGA this year after a lengthy attempt to establish himself in Europe and also won the West Region PGA assistants championship at The Players Club over the main Codrington championship course this summer.

He shot six under 62 after dropping his only shot at the second hole over the newest of the three courses created by Adrian Stiff, the owner.

His back nine burst of six under 28 left the rest of the field with an almost impossible task.

He was six under between holes 12 and 17 with four birdies and a tap-in eagle three on the

13th following a brilliant approach. Not surprisingly he took the birdie sweep as well.

He was first out alongside Chipping Sodbury manager Robin Goodey who was clearly inspired by his partner’s play.

Yet he was the dominant player until Corfield’s birdie blitz and finished second on 65. He shared with his club colleague Giuseppe Licata who reached four under by the 13th hole before he faltered. But third place was sufficient for him to increase his lead to almost 30 points as he continues his quest for a hat-trick of Total Triumph order of merit titles.

In-form duo Martin Dewhurst and Luke Derrick (Henbury) shared fourth on 66.

George Ryall (Worlebury), Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) and Salford assistant Chris Coles were joint sixth on 67.
