Nessling catches Wootton in Spanish tie

Consistent rounds for Cooden Beach’s Paul Nessling (pictured above) paid off as he caught Oxford Golf Centre’s Adam Wootton to finish on three-under-par 285 and share top prize at the four round Golf Escapes El Rompido PGA Pro-Am.
After posting the two lowest rounds of the tournament, Wootton had a substantial lead over Nessling and Canterbury Golf Club’s Richard Wallis after the halfway point. A disastrous third round of 76 cut his lead over Nessling to three, and in the fourth round he continued to drop shots allowing Nessling to get level. After pars on his first 13 holes, Nessling eagled to go two ahead but a bogey at the next cut his lead to one. Wootton then birdied his 16th to catch Nessling and both finished par birdie to tie.
Both players took home cheques for £650 and Nessling was delighted, saying: “I left myself with a lot to do by the halfway point, but on the final nine things got very interesting. We both pushed hard, so a tie was a pretty fair result!”
He added: “Golf Escapes put together a fantastic all-inclusive package for this event with four competitive rounds over two beautiful and very natural courses. Both the North and South were in terrific condition for the Pro-Am, and there was lots of warm and sunny weather - just what you want when it’s close to freezing back in the UK!”
The team event was won by Vidauban’s Peter Mitchell, captaining his team of Carl Saunders, Willy Brown and Graham Hillan to victory with a 14-under-par total. Nessling’s colleague, Cooden Beach’s PGA Assistant Colton Davis, took his team into second place on 11-under.
The PGA in England (South) is now gearing up for their next Overseas Pro-Am trip on 14-16 November to Portugal. The Golf Escapes Algarve Overseas PGA Pro-Am will see 15 teams play three tournament rounds at Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal and South courses plus the stunning Monte Rei.
