Cooden Beach’s Paul Nessling is riding the crest of a wave at the moment, capitalising on his top form by winning the West Surrey Pro-Am with a stunning seven-under-par 64*.
His bogey free round earned him the £1,000 winner’s cheque and put him four shots ahead of recent winner Richard Wallis (Canterbury).
Wallis shot a tidy 68 for the second spot and £800, while Andy Raitt (St., George’s Hill) delivered a 69 to finish in third place.
The Pro-Am wasn’t all about the serious stuff, as the players all had a go at the Lanson Champagne Shootout, a nearest the pin competition held straight after play on the 18th hole where each professional was allowed up to three attempts from 180 yards.
Providing a lot of après golf entertainment for the large field of PGA Professionals, amateurs and a lot of West Surrey’s members, this champagne shoot out was won by home PGA Professional, Duncan Giblett, whose shot to nine feet picked up a cool £500 and a magnum of Lanson.
The team event was won by West Byfleet’s Jonathan Field and his team with a score of 15-under-par to take the goodies off the well filled prize table.
As well as praising West Surrey’s condition and super slick greens, Nessling was delighted with his round, saying: “I’m making the most of some good form. Sawgrass was an amazing experience and gives me a boost every time I think about it, so it was terrific to come to West Surrey and produce some decent figures again.”
Nessling reached the turn in 33, ie. three-under with birdies at the sixth, eighth and ninth. With another birdie at the 14th, Nessling delivered a very strong finish to his back nine with three more on the last three holes to finish on the winning score of 64 and claim a four shot victory.
