NEW Disability Workshops Launched to Support Demand

18/07/2016

 IGC PS

In support of the latest strategy from Sport England and the ongoing targets of various organisations in golf we are delighted to announce two new dates for the Inclusive Golf Coaching Disability Workshops.

The workshops will be led by PGA Fellow Professional, Craig Thomas, and co-delivered with PGA Professionals James Morrow and Mark Taylor. Lasting just 1-day each, the aim of these workshops is to equip PGA Professionals across Great Britain & Ireland with the knowledge and skills to deliver coaching sessions to disabled participants which will be informative, fun and effective.

The first workshop Inclusive Golf Coaching (IGC) 1 is the introductory session which will introduce professionals to the basic principles of inclusive coaching and build coaches confidence in working with disabled participants. It includes a practical coaching opportunity with disabled participants, allowing coaches the opportunity to put what they’ve learned into practice. This session will take place on 8 December 2016 at The PGA National Training Academy.

The second workshop Inclusive Golf Coaching (IGC) 2 is new and was specifically designed by The PGA to address feedback from PGA Professionals. The request from PGA Professionals asked for more impairment specific knowledge, as such, the IGC 2 workshop is classroom based and will equip delegates with a better understanding of the specifics of visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental health issues, special education needs and learning disabilities. Being more advanced in nature and a follow-up to the introductory course, to attend this workshop you must have attended IGC1. This session will take place on 6 April 2017 at The PGA National Training Academy.

Here is what Danielle Thomas (Regional Coach Development Officer - North Region, Team Lead for Disability) had to say about IGC2:

‘Our latest developments in disability training are a response to feedback consistently given by our PGA Professionals around the need for impairment specific training in this area. Although, critically we believe every golfer should be treated as an individual, with their needs and wants met by coaching, gaining a better working knowledge of impairment specifics provided by our new workshop, can in my opinion, only help coaches provide a consistently high quality coaching experience for disabled golfers.’
