James Ruth (above) set a new course record of six-under-par 63 in winning his third event of the year at Cornish coastal course Falmouth.

The China Fleet player’s three-shot success was founded in eight birdies including five in six from the seventh hole. He started with a birdie and finished with a two more at the 16th and 17th.

Although he dropped two shots he escaped on the third when his pitch to the green ended out of bounds, but he got up and down.

Despite his low round he said: “I didn’t really hit the ball very well but the secret was that I holed a lot of putts.”

Grant Slater (Trevose), who made an eagle two at the 277-yard 13th, also suffered an out of bounds when he pulled his second shot at the par five 17th to drop a shot. But he parred the last for 69 to claim second place.

This resisted the challenge of Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton), Adam Frayne (Yelverton), Ashley Moon (Okehampton) and Chris Gill (Newquay) by one shot.

On the Ocean BMW Falmouth-sponsored day that started in early drizzle, home professional Nick Rogers was rewarded for his diligent organisation when he led home the winning trio of Steve Burrows, Ian Churchill and Terry Dickinson on 21-under-par 123.

Moon’s team of Robin Webb, Andy Perry and Louis Parry were three shots behind with Ruth leading Jack Jordan, Luke Crocker and Mike Jordan into third on 127.
