No remedy to halt in-form Watson

Michael Watson continued his domination of tournaments in July by winning the Remedy Oak Pro-Am for the second time in three years - his sixth victory in 21 days.

His six-under-par 66 was two lower than the return made by his best pal Martyn Thompson (Parkstone) who was a late replacement for home director of golf Nigel Tokely, who was forced to withdraw because of a wrist injury.

Thompson eagled the par five 17^th which pushed Ross Whitelock (St Mellion) into third place a further shot back. James Wilson (Ferndown), who shared top spot with Watson and Thompson in 2012, was fourth on 70.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional birdied the second hole and then made two three-birdie bursts from the sixth and 15th, dropping his only shot at the 483-yard par four 14th.

As well as heading the Order of Merit, Watson also extended his lead on the money list to £10,940, averaging £341 at each event. So far this month he has banked £6,659 for an 11-tournament average of £605. It was his seventh win this season and he has only failed to win five of his first 11 outings this month.

He clearly starts as favourite in the fifth Order of Merit tournament the Forest Classic in the Forest of Dean, which begins on Sunday and concludes on Monday.

Watson also won the team prize with Patrick’s Restaurant trio of Pat Michael, William Burke and Richard Matthews on 10-under-par 132.

They beat former Broadstone professional Mathew Wilson (Callaway Golf Europe) with Sensus Communis Ltd trio of Steve Jarrett, Andy Morris and Paul Hannam on countback.

Dan Carter (Upavon) led Grove Wealth Management’s John Askew, Kevin Peel and Tim Ferrier into third on 134.
