Tartan Tour pacemaker Paul O’Hara unleashed a birdie blitz at Portlethen Golf Club to lead the Northern Open by two shots at the halfway stage.
O’Hara, who represents North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, posted a bogey-free eight under par round of 64 in the Arnold Clark-sponsored Order of Merit event.
In doing so he recorded eight birdies, six coming on the back nine after he reached the turn in two-under.
At that stage, however, he was well adrift of the Renaissance Club’s Chris Doak.
In what was a mirror image of O’Hara’s birdie bonanza after the turn, Doak recorded six on the front nine but was unable to maintain his momentum thereafter.
Three more birdies were cancelled out by bogeys and Doak finished level on six-under with Lanark Golf Club’s Stephen Gray.
He, too, was two-under at the turn but moved into overdrive on the way home by recording five birdies tempered by a solitary bogey at the par-three 12th.
