PGA Channel Islands Pro-Am Success

Jack Quilligan mastered gale force winds on day one tempered by blustery sunshine on day two to win the PGA Channel Islands Challenge.

The tournament, open to all but primarily for local PGA Professionals, was well supported by islanders and visitors from the mainland. Now in its 7th year, the 36 hole individual event over both the La Moye and Royal Jersey golf courses was run in conjunction with a PGA Pro-Am at La Moye.

PGA Regional Manager Sam Smith commented: “After all the hard work by Jersey Golf Coaching’s Alex Mollin to get this event going, it’s great to see it growing in size and stature every year.”

He added: “The PGA is there to support all its Members wherever in the world they are, and with the level of continued local support seen here this week, we are keen to make the PGA Channel Islands Challenge a regular and bigger fixture. It’s also great to be able to showcase the fantastic golf that Jersey has to offer.”

Over the two rounds Quilligan just managed to pip local man Rory Dervin from La Moye on the second extra playoff hole after both tied. In conditions best described as brutal on the first day at La Moye, Quilligan delivered 32 points, one behind the leaders Dervin and Daniel Scriven from St. George’s Hill, Surrey.

On day two at Royal Jersey home Pro,JP O’Doherty outscored everyone with a three-under-par 39 points but had too much to do to force his way up to the top of the leaderboard.

In the Pro-Am event, Quilligan led his amateurs to victory with a score of 81, edging the Rosscot team with David Haines from Burnham & Berrow. There were also prizes for Royal Jersey amateur Ryan Riley as the leading amateur, and Pentland Golf’s Sophie Daws as the best placed female golfer in the field.
