PGA Cup place a source of great satisfaction for Higgins

13/09/2022

David Higgins admits he took great satisfaction from booking his place on the Great Britain & Ireland team ahead of the 30th PGA Cup matches at Foxhills Club & Resort from 16-18th September, 2022.

The Waterville professional officially earned his spot on Captain David Russell’s side courtesy of his tied-fifth finish at the PGA Professional Championship at Slaley Hall in June.

The result followed a typically consistent campaign on the region for Higgins who has tasted victory three times so far in 2022, while he also shared-fourth place at the PGA Play-Offs at Slieve Russell.

Now Higgins hopes to keep that form going ahead of a welcomed return to team competition at a venue he knows well.

“The PGA Cup is a fantastic event and one that I’m really going to enjoy,” said Higgins who made his PGA Cup debut at Foxhills in 2017.

“It will be nice to play a bit of team golf again but earning that spot is just a sign that I’m playing well in all of the other events so that gives me confidence too.

“In the PGA Professional Championship and the PGA Play-Offs, I played steady. Although I didn’t win them, my play was very consistent and I qualified in third or fourth place for the team.

“As I said, the main thing is it’s a sign that I’ve been playing well and getting on the team is a consequence of that and a nice bonus too.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

Higgins will have fond memories upon teeing up at Foxhills having enjoyed a successful debut at the same venue in the PGA Cup in 2017 where GB&I defeated the USA 16-10.

That week Higgins played a starring role, winning three matches and halving another as GB&I ran out convincing winners.

Having won practically all there is to win at an individual level during a glittering PGA career, Higgins admits that the honour of playing for something bigger than himself helped him maximise his performance in 2017, something he’ll be looking to repeat this year.

“The PGA Cup is a step up and it’s always very special,” Higgins added.

“You’re not out there on your own. You’re representing your fellow PGA professionals, your family and your friends so this is big.

“I’ll obviously have nice memories to draw on out there but more than anything, it’s just a huge honour for everyone involved and I’m sure we’ll be ready to go in a few weeks’ time at Foxhills.”

First played in 1973, the PGA Cup is a biennial contest between the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland and America. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of a PGA Professional’s career, the winner of the Ryder Cup style format at week’s end at Foxhills will win the famous Llandudno International Trophy. The USA are this year’s defending champions after defeating GB&I 14-12 at Barton Creek Resort, Texas in 2019.
