PGA North stage Moortown pro-am

Moortown Golf Club, host of the first Ryder Cup on British soil in 1929, is arguably one of Britain's finest inland courses which was designed by legendary architect Dr Alister MacKenzie 20 years earlier.

And it’s expected to attract a big field of top professionals not only from Yorkshire but from across the region for a pro-am on April 13 following the success of the historic Leeds Cup last summer.

The tournament was run by PGA North, custodians of the famous old trophy inaugurated in 1902 and won by Chester-based tour player Garry Houston for the second time.

PGA North secretary Graham Maly said: “We wanted to continue our affiliation with Moortown after their support of the Leeds Cup and organising a pro-am at one of the best venues in the country seemed a fantastic opportunity.”

Moortown secretary Peter Rishworth added: “The Leeds Cup drew a lot of interest and we are hoping the pro-am will be well supported. We expect the course to have fully recovered from the harsh winter.

“A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes and we are confident the greens and fairways will be up to their usual high standard.”

Pro-am teams, costing £300, will comprise PGA professional and three amateurs. Registration will be from 9am for a shotgun start at 10.30am.

Prizes will be presented at the end of play.
