PGA pro Alan Strange dies at 59

Tributes have been paid to former PGA professional Alan Strange, described as an "incredible man" who has died suddenly aged 59.

He was founder and co-owner of The Brow Golf Club between Ellesmere and Oswestry who at his peak played alongside the likes of Ian Woosnam and Seve Ballesteros on the European Tour.

Strange joined the paid ranks under Oswestry Golf Club professional Roy Williamson and won the Midlands Assistants’ Championship in 1980.

He later became assistant professional at Shaw Hill Golf Club in Chorley before becoming the club professional at Kibworth in Leicestershire.

In 1994, he worked alongside his father, Alf Strange, to set out the nine-hole course at The Brow Golf Club, aimed at beginners and the pay-and-play trade.

With his wife Catherine, he ran the club which has become a popular north Shropshire venue for dinners and events.

Oswestry Town Council clerk Dave Preston was Strange’s friend for more than half a century and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

"He was a tremendous host and would always put everyone else first before himself," said Preston.

Former Advertizer editor Colin Channon interviewed Strange on several occasions and described him as a "very entertaining man."

"He was full of really good stories," he said. "He had a lot of great experiences to share, especially about the time he spent on the European Tour. What he did at the Brow was brilliant.

"He was incredibly modest about his achievements.

"Our thoughts are with Catherine and family at this most difficult time."

His funeral will be at The Pentre-bychan Crematorium, Wrexham, LL14 4EP at 11.00a.m on Tuesday, March 5, followed by a wake at the United Reform Chapel.
