PGA Professional Luke Willett completes 72 holes of golf in under three hours!

06/09/2022

Luke Willett played 72 holes of golf along with fellow speed golf partner, Jamie Taylor, at Cleeve Hill Golf Club in just two hours and 56 minutes.

Playing with nothing more than a 6-iron, the duo climbed around 600-metres and managed over 24,000 steps, as they conquered the picturesque layout in Cheltenham.

Having previously completed the Marathons of Golf, a quest that was in aid of the Golf Foundation charity that required playing all 14 Open Championship courses, as well as exploring the towns that the courses are located in, Luke embarked on a challenge that many thought couldn’t be done.

"We started at 5am on the dot and were finished before 8am!” Luke revealed. “Not only did we do it in under three hours, but we did it as a two ball. It’s one thing to say you did it by yourself, but to do it as a two ball is pretty incredible.

“You had me, a PGA Professional who loves loves running, then you had Jamie who is an elite runner and loves his golf! It’s a pretty cool story of different backgrounds combining to play our great sport.”

Playing a course rich in history with some design elements created by the likes of Old Tom Morris, Luke described the day as 'extremely challenging', which is understandable when you consider the duo undertook the challenge on one of the hottest days of the year.

However, difficulty is condition Luke thrives on, with the PGA South region professional stating: “I did my fundraising at Royal Liverpool at the finale of the Marathons of Golf.

“To be able to do these challenges and incentives for good causes and good reasons, to raise money and help grow the sport and raise awareness for our great golf clubs, is just incredible and makes the effort worthwhile.”

Following his bumper year, Luke is showing no signs of slowing down, as he plans on defending his British Speed Golf Championship title, as well as beginning a new coaching venture at Sunningdale Heath from September.
