Kevyn Cunningham speaks about his varied experience of working as a PGA Member abroad and how he landed his latest role as the Director of Golf at Half Moon in Jamaica.
What attracted you to working internationally as a PGA Professional and when did you move abroad?
I have always enjoyed travelling and being exposed to different cultures. My first position overseas was in the south of Austria in 1987. After joining The Leadbetter Academies (IMG) I then went on to teach in Germany, South Korea, Colorado and Mexico as well as conducting clinics at many other locations.
What is golf like in Jamaica – is it becoming more popular?
On the north coast of Jamaica, we have four top class golf facilities - Half Moon, Cinnamon Hill, The White Witch and The Tryall Club. Half Moon is located just 10 minutes away from the Sangster International Airport (MBJ), with Cinnamon Hill and White Witch being just five minutes away from Half Moon. These facilities cater predominantly to golfers visiting the island, and we have partnered with White Witch and Cinnamon Hill to offer the “Jamaica’s Finest Golf Package”, which offers a stay and play component.
We also have a strong local community and a strong junior base which is growing rapidly.
What attracted you to work in Jamaica and how did you land your current role as Director of Golf at Half Moon?
Life is too short for long trousers! The weather and the people of Jamaica are the main influence for me coming here. I find Jamaicans are such upbeat, positive people and they are extremely resilient. They are great fun to be around and a pleasure to work with.
I initially arrived on the island to open a seasonal David Leadbetter Academy and the management of the resort asked me to stay on after the previous Director of Golf left. I did leave to resume a successful seasonal teaching career during the summer months in Austria; however, I was drawn to return to Half Moon on a full-time basis.
Half Moon is an iconic resort destination, founded in 1954 on 35 acres and has since expanded to 400 acres with two miles of beachfront. It is a beautiful property with 210 rooms and suites throughout Founders Cove at Half Moon, and Eclipse at Half Moon, and 28 villas at Rose Hall Villas at Half Moon (perfect for groups of golfers). Eclipse opened in March 2020, completing a collection of three luxury experiences that will certainly delight discerning travellers.
The course here was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., opened in 1962 and was later modernised by Roger Rulewich. It is a bow-tie classic layout and a beautiful walking course. There are many opportunities for beginners and pros to grow in their game and we welcome these opportunities, which can be enhanced with our launch monitor technology as well as the wealth of knowledge and insights shared by the charming and spirited caddies.
Can you explain more about the process of working in Jamaica? What key skills, experience, qualifications are needed to secure necessary permits?
Obtaining a work permit for Jamaica isn’t easy as skill sets are required that cannot be easily filled by a resident of Jamaica. Because of the quality of life here, there is a steady influx of workforce willing to relocate to this beautiful island and measures have to be in place to protect the local workforce. Most of the major hotels however will assist in obtaining permits.
What advice would you give to other PGA Members about working abroad?
I would suggest that all young professionals attempt to travel, to work in places that are demanding and force you to learn. Try to experience as many cultures as possible, learn the language and embrace the diversity of experiences.
What does a typical working day for you involve as Director of Golf?
My day usually starts with strong cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and a tour of the golf course to ensure all is well and presentable for our valued guests. I oversee the golf operation including the pro shop retail, outside services, staff scheduling, instruction among other duties.
I try to spend a little time with each staff member to ensure they are prepared for what the day brings and whether they have the support needed. I try to be in the pro shop to chat to guests during registration and listen to any concerns. I also liaise with various departments in the hotel to help promote golf.
Afternoons will find me in the office crunching numbers at the computer or generating reports.
What plans are on the horizon for the resort in the short/medium and long term?
Half Moon launched its newest resort experience, Eclipse at Half Moon to much celebration in March 2020. We’re looking forward to continuing its introduction to our loyal repeat and new guests.
I have possibly one of the best golf positions in the business at one of the best resorts in the world. Golf here is also a remarkable experience and I invite golfers to add Jamaica to their lists of destinations.
I do miss a real ale though!
