PGA pros unite to raise cash for the NHS

More than 90 golf professionals from The PGA’s East and South regions will unite to raise cash for the NHS in a tournament at West Essex Golf Club, Chingford, later this month.

The NHS London Open 2020, which will be held on July 23, is an annual tournament organised by The PGA’s East and South regions and proceeds from this year’s event will go to the NHS as a ‘thank you’ for its efforts in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

The aim is to raise a minimum of £20,000 and Chris Baron, the head PGA Professional at West Essex, said: “We’ve all been affected by the pandemic in a host of different ways.

“But we must come together for the greater cause- to remember those who have suffered and to support the real superheroes, the NHS staff and front-line workers.”

The tournament will be the first involving PGA pros staged in the East region since lockdown in March and key restrictions will be in place to ensure the participants’ safety.

“The tournament will no doubt be played in a different way,” added Baron.  “Scoring will be online, there will be new rules for bunker play, flagsticks are not to be touched and social distancing must be adhered to at all times.

“Golf has begun again at West Essex and across England but with a difference. There are key safety measures in place, safety of the golfers and social distancing a priority – it’s proving to be a huge success.

“Our golfing community would like to thank all the professionals, volunteers, golf managers, the governing bodies, The PGA, The R&A, England Golf and the government in general for the amazing work they have done to get the game moving again.”

In keeping with the strict adherence to social distancing and safety-first changes to the game’s rules and conditions, a key part of the fundraising will be conducted via an online auction.

“Each player will be asked to donate a fourball or memorabilia from their respective clubs so we can auction them online to raise money for the NHS charity,” explained Gordon Campbell, PGA East regional manager.

Sam Smith, his PGA South counterpart, added: “We ask any PGA Professional from across the country, our secretaries, golf club members, European Tour stars, famous golfing celebrities, sporting superstars, footballers, golfing suppliers, media and sporting publications to unite and support the NHS. Let’s see what can be achieved.”
