Boat of Garten professional Ross Harrower believes the Staysure Trophy will go from strength to strength after its inaugural year.
Harrower and Inverness-based amateur Gordon MacDonald reached the final after topping the leaderboard at Crieff Golf Club to win by three points ahead of Chris McMaster and David Doyle of Dundee’s Downfield Golf Club
The Boat of Garten duo now head to the showpiece Staysure event which will be staged from July 31 to August 1 at the London Golf Club near Sevenoaks, Kent.
The pro-am competition sponsored by Staysure, the insurance specialists for over 50s, has been launched by the PGA this year is aimed at senior amateurs and carries a £30,000 prize fund.
And Harrower says the event will only become more popular from now on.
“The guys who played there were very keen on the event considering the amount of senior golfers there are now,” he explained.
“And once we all saw the details for the final we think it’s a cracking event and when more people see that then there’ll be bigger field and I don’t think it’ll struggle at all.
“I see it going from strength to strength, the number of senior players is growing and I don’t see it being an issue.
“We have an ageing membership here and I don’t think getting them to compete in this would be a problem.”
Harrower and MacDonald kept their eyes on the prize and finished strongly with a nett eagle and two birdies over the final three holes.
“Gordon’s quite competitive guy by nature and he knew Crieff quite well which helped,” added Harrower.
“We were determined to do well and we played well on the day, but we hadn’t played as a team before.”
