Glen Portelli (Old Fold Manor) and Paul Hetherington (Great Hadham) shared the spoils at the Verulam Pro-Am after both shot four-under-par rounds of 68.

The pair were two shots clear of Stuart Brown (Thorpe Wood) and Matt Cort (Beedles Lake) with a quartet tied at one-under.

Portelli, a former assistant PGA professional at Verulam, and Hetherington were both among the early starters and the former didn’t waste time in marking his mark. He got off to a real flyer, making birdie at four of the first five holes.

Portelli did drop back to one-under through 10 holes before reigniting his challenge with a second birdie hat-trick of the day from the 11th.

That was the hole that Hetherington really stepped up his bid with an eagle three. He picked up three more strokes to reach the clubhouse at four-under. Portelli did get to five-under but made bogey at the 18th to finish alongside Hetherington.

The shot of the day was definitely claimed by Brown who made albatross at the last. He holed out with a wonderful 3-wood from 274 yards to finish at two-under.

Cort skipped the winning team whose total of 127 was one better than the quartet of Daniel Field (East Herts).
