Paul Broadhurst warmed up for the second PGA in England (Midlands) Order of Merit event of the season in fine style by setting a course record at the new Stourbridge layout during the pro-am on Sunday.
The ex-Ryder Cup star didn't have it his own way though as his 67 was matched by visiting golfer Richard O'Hanlon from St Kew in Cornwall, who ironically could have lowered it by a further shot, but bogeyed the final hole. Broadhurst got off to a flier with five birdies in his first seven holes, then turned steady during the back nine with eight successive pars to finish.
Matt Stephens (Birstall) and Andrew Jones shared third with a pair of 68s and there were four golfers a shot further back with little to separate the leading players. Another well supported regional event saw 38 teams take part, of them it was Steve Carter's fourball from Walmley who emerged the victors by a shot in the team competition.
The ever popular Glazerite Trophy is the next regional event, teeing off with a pro-am on Wednesday with the 36 hole Order of Merit event to follow the day after, both to be held at Wellingborough GC.
