Pryors Hayes Golf Club captain Dave Tweddle played his part in a dominant display to reach the Lombard Trophy final at Gleneagles.

Tweddle (left) teamed up with the Chester club’s PGA Professional Adrian Hill (right) to record an untouchable 13-under-par round of 59 at Dunham Forest Golf Club.

The score was the lowest seen this year in what was the last of the 2014 regional finals.

It meant they ran out winners by three shots, ahead of Aran Wainwright and Peter Ellis of Pontefract’s Mid Yorkshire Golf Club; and Gareth Jones and Simon Hope from Sandiway Golf Club in Northwich.

Tweddle and Hill will now play in the £43,600 final over the King’s Course at Gleneagles between September 2-3 - just three weeks before the Ryder Cup is held at the same venue.

For 69-year-old Tweddle, who plays off a handicap of 17, it will be a first trip to the famous Scottish course.

“I’ve heard of it!” he smiled, “but I’ve never played there before so it’ll be a great experience.

“I don’t live far from Dunham Forest but I only played it for the first time about 10 days ago.”

Tweddle had never played alongside former European Tour player Hill who was taking part in the event for the first time.

“We dovetailed together well, and Adrian played superbly,” said Tweddle, a retired education officer who has been at Pryors Hayes since taking up golf 14 years ago.

“There was only one hole that we bogeyed, but we had a great run after that.

“We were the second group out so we had to wait all day to hear that we’d won.”

Hill, formerly of Cheshire’s Hartford Golf Club, put the low winning score down to consistency.

“We played steadily and picked up shots, that was it really.

“I actually wasn’t too surprised by our score, but then I was told it was the lowest score all year in this event.”

“Maybe that’ll make us favourites for the final!”
