Four players shared top spot in the first Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal to be played at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club and for the first time for ages no player in the 27 strong field broke par.

Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre), Ed Goodwin (Cirencester), the previous week’s winner Ashley Mansell (Clevedon) and European Seniors Tour winner George Ryall (Players Club) carded one-over-par 73’s.

Licata (above) and Goodwin are no strangers to Sodbury having competed and enjoyed success at the last two Matchplay Championships held there. With the course playing every inch of its yardage, birdies were hard to come by. The whole field only managed 40 between them and Licata shared the birdie sweep with Mansell with three each.

Licata’s came at the 11th, 13th and 17th. Mansell’s were made at the third, seventh and 18th. Goodwin carded 15 pars with his only birdie coming at the par five ninth when he extricated himself from a water hazard before holing the subsequent putt. Ryall made back to back birdies at the fifth and sixth and also shared the Over 40’s sweep with Goodwin.
