Rain hits first round at King’s Course

Due to heavy overnight and continuing rain at the Perthshire golf resort, the King's Course was too wet for the £40,000 Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship to start on Sunday.

The 72-hole event has now been reduced to 54 holes and will end on Wednesday as scheduled. 

It's 49 years since the championship was last decided over fewer than 72 holes.

In 1966 John Panton and Eric Brown tied over 36 holes for the title at Cruden Bay. For some reason, there was no play-off. They shared the title with 137 aggregates

 PGA in Scotland secretary Brian Mair said: “Despite the marvellous efforts of the greenkeeping staff, there was no way we could get play underway today.

“The decision has been taken to cancel play for the day and resume on Monday with the original Monday Round Two tee times. 

"The plan is to complete 18 holes on Monday and then commence Round Two immediately, with the completion of Round Two expected on Tuesday. At this point, we will make a cut to Top 50 and ties and complete the championship on Wednesday over the remaining 18 holes."
